If a single cream could solve every skin concern, the line to buy it would be endless. Imagine one product that calms inflamed acne while also brightening skin and fading marks. Or a formula that helps skin look healthier and more youthful.

Meet niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 also called nicotinamide. In skincare, niacinamide is known as a multitasking ingredient. It’s used not only for acne and eczema but also to improve overall skin texture. Many people add it to their routine because it can address several concerns at once.

Benefits of Niacinamide

What are the benefits of niacinamide for the skin?

  • Brightens the skin. According to MedicineNet, research suggests niacinamide helps reduce excess pigmentation (hyperpigmentation). In short, regular use can make skin look brighter within a few weeks.
  • Treats inflamed acne. Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory effects, both when taken orally as a supplement and when applied to the skin. It helps calm the skin, so redness from inflammation can decrease in the short term.
  • Moisturizes the skin. Niacinamide supports a healthier moisture barrier, helping skin stay hydrated.
  • Tightens the skin. It can promote keratin production, which helps keep skin firm and looking healthy.
  • Helps balance oil and sebum production, which can reduce acne.
  • Helps minimize the look of pores.
  • Improves skin condition after sun and UV exposure. Too much sun can leave skin dull and lackluster. Niacinamide can help the skin feel softer and more supple again.
  • Reduces fine lines and facial wrinkles.
  • Helps restore the skin and protect it from stressors such as sun exposure, air pollution, and toxins.
  • When taken by mouth, niacinamide may also help lower the risk of certain skin cancers.

Side Effects

Being a multitasker doesn’t mean niacinamide is perfect. Like other ingredients, it can cause side effects. The good news: serious reactions are uncommon.

Reported side effects with oral use include stomach upset, bloating, dizziness, rashes, itching, and similar complaints. To lower the risk of side effects, adults are generally advised not to exceed 35 mg of niacinamide per day.

With topical (applied) use, WebMD notes reports of burning, itching, and redness. To reduce the chance of irritation, read product reviews before purchasing skincare that contains niacinamide. Even better, talk with a trusted dermatologist about your skin type and concerns.
