Indications

Biotin is primarily used to prevent and treat biotin deficiency. Symptoms of this deficiency include hair loss, dry skin, and other conditions confirmed by laboratory tests.

Contraindications

There is no absolute contradiction in the use of biotins. People with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to biotin should avoid its use. Individuals who experience hives or swelling of the face and eyelids should discontinue taking this medicine.

Side Effects

Although side effects are rare, they can include:

• Nausea

• Stomach discomfort

• Diarrhea

• Allergic reactions, including hives, difficulty breathing, and facial swelling.

Types

• Drops: 5 mcg/mL

• Syrup: 100 mcg/5mL

• Caplets: 50 mcg, 150 mcg

• Sugar-coated tablets: 35 mcg

Dosage

For the prevention of biotin deficiency:

• Newborns to 3 years: 5-20 mcg/day

• Ages 4-6 years: 25 mcg/day

• Ages 7-10 years: 30 mcg/day

• Adolescents and adults: 30-100 mcg/day

For treating biotin deficiency:

• Both children and adults: 5-20 mg daily.

Safety

Pregnancy: FDA Category N (the risk to the fetus is not fully understood; consult a doctor before use).

Drug Interactions

Anti-seizure medications, such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and phenytoin, may reduce biotin absorption, leading to lower levels in the body.
