You’ve probably heard that probiotic foods are beneficial for your health. But do you know exactly what probiotics are?
Probiotics, as explained by Healthline, are live microorganisms found in fermented foods or dietary supplements. Research has shown that the balance of bacteria in the digestive system plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. Probiotics help to maintain this balance by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria.
Probiotics are naturally found in various parts of the body, including the intestines, mouth, vagina, urinary tract, skin, and lungs. According to the Cleveland Clinic, probiotics provide several health benefits:
-
Aid in digestion
-
Control harmful bacteria to prevent them from causing illness
-
Support the production of certain vitamins
-
Prevent harmful bacteria from entering the bloodstream through the intestines
-
Assist in breaking down and absorbing medications
Two common types of probiotics found in food are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These beneficial bacteria can be found in the following probiotic-rich foods:
Yogurt
Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics. It’s made from milk that has been fermented with beneficial bacteria. Regular consumption of yogurt can help maintain bone health, lower the risk of high blood pressure, prevent diarrhea, and even assist in managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in children.
Kefir
Kefir is another fermented milk product, typically made from cow's or goat's milk. In addition to promoting bone health, kefir is excellent for addressing digestive issues.
Tempe
Tempe is a fermented soybean product that offers a savory, nutty flavor. It is a good source of probiotics and also contains vitamin B12, which is generally found in animal products like red meat, fish, milk, and eggs.
Kimchi
Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made from Chinese cabbage or other vegetables. Before fermentation, the vegetables are mixed with garlic, salt, scallions, chili powder, and ginger. Kimchi is packed with vitamins such as vitamin K and B2, and it’s also rich in iron.
Miso
Miso, a staple in Japanese cuisine, is a seasoning made from fermented soybeans with salt and a fungus called Koji. Miso is loaded with protein, fiber, vitamin K, manganese, and copper.
Pickles
Pickles are made by fermenting cucumbers in a salt and water solution. While pickles can be a good source of probiotics, it’s important to note that those made with vinegar do not contain any probiotics.
In addition to the foods listed above, probiotics can also be taken in supplement form. Make sure to include probiotics in your diet for better digestive health!
