How It Works

Buspirone is an anxiolytic medication, meaning it is used to treat anxiety. It works by affecting the levels of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, in the brain. These neurotransmitters are compounds that send messages between nerve cells.

Indications

Buspirone is primarily used to treat anxiety disorders. It can be used for short-term or temporary therapy to alleviate anxiety symptoms.

Contraindications

Buspirone should not be given to individuals with the following conditions:

  • A history of buspirone allergy

  • Severe liver dysfunction

  • Severe kidney dysfunction

  • Epilepsy (a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures)

Side Effects

Common side effects of buspirone include:

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Nervousness

  • Restlessness

  • Blurred vision

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty sleeping

In some cases, buspirone can cause muscle-related disorders, including:

  • Movement disorders like tremors

  • Muscle stiffness

  • A mask-like facial expression

  • Jerky walking movements

  • Tardive dyskinesia (a condition involving involuntary muscle movements, which can sometimes be permanent)

If you experience any unusual or uncontrolled movements, especially of the face, mouth, tongue, arms, or legs, inform your doctor immediately.

Seek medical attention if you experience serious side effects such as easy bruising or bleeding, shortness of breath, chest pain, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Types

Buspirone is available in 10 mg caplets.

Dosage

  • The starting dose for buspirone is 5 mg, taken 2 or 3 times daily.
  • The dose can be gradually increased in 5 mg increments every 2-3 days.
  • The usual dose is 15-30 mg per day, divided into multiple doses.
  • The maximum allowable dose is 60 mg per day.

Safety

Sedative Effects

Buspirone may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you are sure it is safe to do so. It is also important to avoid alcoholic beverages.

Do Not Stop Treatments Abruptly

If you are using other medications for anxiety, do not stop them suddenly unless directed by your doctor. Buspirone cannot prevent withdrawal symptoms from other medications, so your dose may need to be gradually reduced when switching to buspirone. Always discuss your treatment plan with your doctor, and inform them immediately if you experience withdrawal symptoms.

Pregnant And Breastfeeding Women

Buspirone should only be used during pregnancy if it is absolutely necessary. It is unknown whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before taking buspirone during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

The combination of buspirone with MAOIs can lead to a serious and potentially fatal interaction. Avoid using MAOIs while taking buspirone, including drugs such as:

  • Metaxalone
  • Methylene blue
