Fasting during Ramadan is a significant religious practice, but it also offers various health benefits for both the body and the mind. It helps control blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, promote heart health, enhance brain function, manage weight, extend lifespan, and even reduce the risk of cancer.

However, not everyone experiences these positive effects. Some individuals may face health challenges while fasting, particularly if they do not prioritize proper nutrition or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Common Diseases Experienced During Fasting

While fasting, certain health issues can arise that interfere with daily activities. Here are some of the most common health problems:

Dehydration

Dehydration is a frequent issue during fasting, especially on hot days. Not consuming enough water can lead to symptoms like dizziness, exhaustion, dry mouth, and difficulty concentrating.

To stay hydrated, it's recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water, which can be spread out during the hours of breaking the fast and before dawn (sahur). Avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea, as they can contribute to faster fluid loss in the body.

Headaches

Headaches during fasting are often triggered by dehydration, lack of sleep, and low blood sugar. For some individuals, suddenly cutting out caffeine can also be a headache trigger during fasting.

Digestive Disorders

The changes in diet during fasting can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, and acid reflux. Overeating at iftar (the meal to break the fast) can also worsen these digestive problems.

Low Blood Sugar Levels

Low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can occur during fasting, resulting in symptoms like dizziness, shaking, and weakness. This condition is especially risky for people with diabetes who fast without medical supervision.

To prevent rapid increases and decreases in blood sugar levels, it’s advisable to avoid consuming large amounts of sugary foods when breaking the fast. If you have type 2 diabetes, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, it’s important to consult a doctor before fasting.

Canker Sores and Bad Breath

Inadequate fluid intake and changes in diet during fasting can lead to issues like canker sores, bad breath, and dry lips. To prevent these, it’s essential to drink enough water during sahur and iftar, regularly brush your teeth after eating and before bedtime, and meet your vitamin C needs through fruits and vegetables.

By ensuring a balanced diet, staying well-hydrated, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly, the risk of illness during fasting can be minimized. For individuals with specific health conditions, it’s recommended to consult a doctor before fasting.
