Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent, sudden seizures. In Indonesia, its prevalence is estimated at 0.5% to 4% of the population. Seizures can occur from imbalances in the electrical activity of the brain. There are two types of seizure: generalized seizure and partial seizure.
If you see someone having a seizure, stay calm and follow these first aid steps:
-
Protect their head with a pillow or folded clothing.
-
Keep their airway clear around the nose and mouth; place the person on one side.
-
Do not put any objects into their mouth.
-
Loosen tight clothing.
-
Move the person to a safe area to prevent injury.
-
Stay with them until they are fully awake and reassure them; do not offer food or drink until they are completely alert.
If the seizure continues for longer than 5 minutes, this is called status epilepticus. Take the person to the Emergency Department at the nearest hospital immediately. Do not let a seizure go on too long, as it can injure brain tissue and be life-threatening.
If you have epilepsy, take your medicines as prescribed and attend regular check-ups with your doctor.
