Crying is a natural body response when a person feels sad or disappointed. But if you often cry suddenly and find it difficult to stop, this condition may be related to health problems. Check out the following article to find out the possible causes and treatments.

Causes Of Uncontrolled Crying

Humans have 3 types of tears, namely basal tears to lubricate their eyes, reflex tears to protect their eyes from foreign objects, and emotional tears that appear when you cry because you are sad or happy. Crying is a healthy body response to the stimuli received both internally and externally.

Uncontrolled crying is often associated with mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety, but neurological disorders can also be the cause. Knowing the underlying cause can help determine the right handling.

Causes a person can cry uncontrollably include:

Stress

Stress can lead to various emotions that have the potential to cause or worsen mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. This condition often makes a person feel depressed and cry easily. If you feel emotionally unstable and cry frequently, it is likely that you are experiencing prolonged stress.

Anxiety

Anxiety can trigger strong emotional and physical responses, one of which is crying. As anxiety increases, the body experiences a spike in stress hormones that can burden the nervous system. Crying then becomes one of the natural ways for the body to release the tensions and pressures that have accumulated.

Adjustment disorder

Adjustment disorder is one of the mental health problems that usually occurs after a person experiences an important event in life. This condition is prone to someone who is grieving, losing someone who is loved, experiencing rejection, or great trauma in life.

Hormonic changes

Hormonic changes, such as those experienced by pregnant women or women who enter the PMS period (perimenopaus), can make a person more prone to crying. In pregnant women, hormonal changes that occur often cause emotional fluctuations, and these conditions generally occur at the beginning of pregnancy.

Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is a condition that shows differences in the natural response to how the human brain works. This condition can be seen in the sufferer autism and ADHD.

People with neurodiversity tend to cry more easily because they have different ways of the brain in responding to emotions, so that a person can experience sensitivity, easily bored, stress, joy or excessive anxiety, and easily crying.

Pseudobulbar affect

Pseudobulbar affect is a neurological problem that causes a person to laugh or cry suddenly and out of control. This condition is caused by nerve damage, resulting in disorders between brain areas that usually work together to produce and mediate expression of emotions. Usually these conditions can occur due to accidents, tumors, strokes, and Alzheimer's disease.

Handling Uncontrolled Crying

Handling uncontrolled crying depends on the cause. For causes caused by anxiety disorders, doctors can provide prescriptions for antidepressant drugs and SSRI (Selective Serotone Reuptake Inhibitors). People with anxiety disorders can also be recommended to undergo ocuption therapy in order to overcome it in everyday life. As for hormonal changes, it will generally subside by itself.

Apart from drugs, there are several ways you can do to deal with uncontrolled crying and interfere with your activities, including:

  • Talking about it with other people, counselors, or psychologists.
  • Divert your focus with other things, for example on funny things like jokes or something else.
  • Respiratory exercise and relaxation.
  • Sports or stretching exercises.
  • Writing journals to track triggers, durations, related emotions, and bad effects of uncontrolled crying.
  • Acupuncture.

Crying is a normal and healthy thing, but if it can't be controlled, it can indicate other health problems. If you experience this, you should check with a doctor or take advantage of the consultation feature in the application Ai Care which can be downloaded via App Store or Play Store
